The Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio on Thursday welcomed His Grace Archbishop Seamus Patrick Horgan, the first-ever residential Apostolic Nuncio to the Republic of South Sudan.

His historic arrival was met with overwhelming joy as hundreds of parishioners, religious leaders from various denominations, government officials and members of the clergy gathered to welcome him in Yambio town, Western Equatoria State.

Archbishop Horgan’s presence in South Sudan marks a significant step in strengthening the Vatican’s relationship with the country, which has been striving for peace and stability after years of conflict.

His visit is seen as a symbol of hope, unity, and a renewed commitment to fostering reconciliation within the nation.

In his address to the masses, Archbishop Horgan conveyed a message from Pope Francis, emphasizing peace, faith, and resilience particularly as South Sudanese Catholics participate in the Jubilee Year celebrations.

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, described the visit as a momentous occasion, highlighting its significance for both the Catholic community and the broader South Sudanese society.

“This is a historic moment that reflects the Vatican’s growing presence and engagement in our country. It signifies a message of peace, hope, and solidarity for all people of South Sudan,” said Kussala.

During his week-long visit, Archbishop Horgan is scheduled to participate in various pastoral activities, including religious ceremonies, meetings with local leaders, and engagements with Catholic communities across the diocese.

His mission aims to strengthen ties between the Vatican and South Sudan while encouraging efforts toward national reconciliation and development.

The visit is being held under the theme: “Jubilee Year of Hope: Enhancing Reconciliation, Solidarity, Unity, Peace, Holiness, Resilience, and Hard Work.”

As South Sudan continues on its path towards peace, the presence of Archbishop Horgan is a testament to the Church’s unwavering support in guiding the nation toward healing and spiritual renewal.
