The Minister of Health for Central Equatoria State, Najwa Juma Mursal, said that Juba County has so far registered 4,284 cases of Cholera ranking it the highest among the Counties of the State.
“Most of the cholera cases are in Juba County, meaning there is a critical need for the county to cooperate with the state Ministry of Health,” said Juma over the weekend in Juba.
She noted 181 cases out of the total 4,465 cases have been recorded in the remaining counties of Central Equatoria State.
The rising number of cholera cases has raised significant concerns within the state, with the health minister emphasizing the urgency of implementing preventive measures.
Juma called on local authorities and residents to take collective action in addressing the health crisis.
She stressed the importance of collaboration between local government, health officials, and the community to effectively combat cholera and other diseases in the state.
In addition, Juma noted that Ministry of Health is working tirelessly to reduce the number of new infections and ensure the well-being of the state’s population.
However, she said the urgency for public cooperation remains paramount as the situation continues to develop.
Juma said that her ministry has intensified efforts to curb the outbreak by promoting awareness of hygiene practices, improving access to clean drinking water, and reinforcing sanitation measures.
Cholera, a waterborne disease that causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration, is often spread through contaminated drinking water and poor sanitation conditions. The recent spike in cases underscores the need for immediate intervention to prevent further spread.
Last year, the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners launched a cholera vaccination campaign targeting over 50,000 individuals in the State.
