The South Sudan Civil Society Alliance (SSCSA) on Wednesday commended the transitional unity government for signing the peace agreement with a splinter faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO) under Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual.

“We would like to appreciate the steps taken by the transitional government of Sudan for their full commitment to bring comprehensive peace to the Republic of South Sudan,” said Dabek Mabior Arok, the Deputy Chairperson of SSCSA in an interview in Juba.

The Sudanese embassy in Juba said in a statement the peace mediation facilitated by the Sudanese government commenced in January  and concluded with signing of the peace deal on February 1, 2025  in Port Sudan.

The agreement was signed by Gen.Simon Gatwech Dual, the chairperson of the SPLA-IO Kitgwang faction and Gen. Akech Tong Aleu, the Director General for Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Services.

On August 4, 2021, Simon Gatwech Dual who was then Chief of Staff of SPLA-IO led by First Vice President Riek Machar Teny, defected and formed the breakaway kitgwang faction.

On January 16, 2022, Dual signed a deal with the government in Khartoum to pave way for reintegration of his forces into the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF), but the deal was never implemented.
