The deal signed with SPLA-IO Kitgwang should be implemented in letter and spirit

The recent deal signed by the transitional unity government and a splinter faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Agreement-in Opposition (SPLA-IO), is welcome but this time both parties especially the government must implement it’s share of responsibility.

On January 16, 2022, Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual, the Chairman of SPLA-IO Kitgwang signed a deal with the government in Khartoum to pave way for reintegration of his forces into the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF), but the deal was never implemented.

This latest deal needs to be guaranteed by both the facilitator which is the Sudan Sovereign Council led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and also the transitional unity government in Juba, which holds much sway over the agreement.

The good news is that this agreement marks the end of the SPLA-IO Kitgwang faction, as all it’s forces will be absorbed into the SSPDF. This framework is part of the ongoing efforts to bring total peace and stable security to South Sudan.

The ball is now in the court of the government to fulfill it’s responsibility of ensuring the deal does not collapse.
