President Kiir Directs VP Bol Mel to reform economic sector

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed his Vice President for Economic Cluster, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel to oversee immediate reforms in the economic sector with the aim of diversifying the economy.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed his Vice President for Economic Cluster, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel to oversee immediate reforms in the economic sector with the aim of diversifying the economy.

Kiir also emphasized to Bol Mel on Wednesday during swearing-in at the President’s office alongside the newly appointed Vice President for Service Cluster, Josephine Lagu, of the need to prioritize agriculture to improve food security, said a statement posted on the Presidential Press Unit Facebook page.

For his part, Bol Mel expressed profound gratitude to President Kiir for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him.

 He pledged to serve the nation with loyalty, commitment, and devotion, emphasizing his determination to act without fear or failure in order to benefit the people of South Sudan and the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party.

“I am dedicated to advancing our economic agenda and working closely with H.E. (Kiir) to ensure South Sudan secures its rightful place in the region,” said Bol.

Meanwhile, Josephine Lagu, a member of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) -coalition of opposition parties, expressed her profound appreciation to President Kiir for the opportunity to serve the country.

 “I pledge not to let down the people of South Sudan,” she stated.

Lagu highlighted the collective responsibility of both the government and the citizens in ensuring the provision of essential services and improving living standards across the country.

President Salva Kiir on Monday appointed Benjamin Bol Mel and Josephine Lagu to serve as his Vice Presidents in a presidential decree.

Bol replaced James Wani Igga who was appointed Secretary General of the SPLM party, while Lagu replaced Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, who is now the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.

In total, Kiir dismissed 9 officials including Akech Tong Aleu, the shortest serving Director General of the Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Service (NSS).
