Sudan suspends Kenyan imports due to alleged support of opposition

The Sudanese Embassy in Nairobi on Tuesday confirmed the suspension of all imports from Kenya, citing national security concerns and the need to preserve the country’s sovereignty.

The embassy said the decree issued by Sudan’s Ministry of Trade and Supply on March 11, 2025, has fully been implemented.

“The Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in Nairobi wishes to clarify Sudan’s trade policy concerning imports from Kenya,” said the embassy in a statement.

It said the suspension of all imports from Kenya was in line with Sudan’s national interests.

“This decision has been fully implemented, and since then, no Kenyan products, including Kenyan tea, have been imported into Sudan,” it said.

Sudan said it remains firmly committed to upholding its trade policy as part of its sovereign economic and diplomatic consideration.

It dismissed claims suggesting continued imports as “unfounded and inaccurate.”

“At the same time, the Embassy reaffirms Sudan’s commitment to regional cooperation and constructive dialogue, guided by principles of mutual respect and non-interference.”

The decision came amid escalating diplomatic tensions between Sudan and Kenya over Nairobi’s alleged support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—a paramilitary group engaged in a bloody war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

Kenyan President William Ruto has faced widespread criticism at home for his perceived close ties with the RSF.

Last month, Sudan recalled its ambassador to Kenya in protest against Nairobi’s involvement in a “conspiracy to establish a government” for the RSF.
