The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has urged the government and stakeholders to increase investment in the education sector to especially keep girls in school.

“It is crucial to engage young minds in critical discussions about gender equity. Education is key to empowerment. When girls have access to quality education, it transforms their lives, their communities, and the future of our nation,” said Emmanuel Changun, UNFPA Program Specialist for Gender and Social Norms in a statement on Wednesday.

Changun said South Sudan has embraced education as key to empowerment which will in turn provide a space for young people to become advocates for change, to challenge harmful norms, question stereotypes and to inspire action.

“Our programs focus on preventing and responding to gender-based violence, which disproportionately affects women and girls, and also on investing in young people, providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their lives,” he said.

Changun said that UNFPA works across South Sudan to promote gender equality and empower women and young people, adding that ‘Empowering women and girls will help promote equality, safety, and a healthy environment.

He also revealed that their national focus acknowledges the specific challenges faced by women and girls in this country, adding that challenges such as limited access to education and leadership opportunities need to be addressed to create a safe and healthy environment.

“It is time to renew our commitment to the ongoing struggle for gender equality, we believe that by addressing these interconnected issues, we can create a more equitable and just society for all,” said Changun.
