The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) announced on Friday the return of 3,840 bags of substandard white sorghum to neighboring Uganda.

The consignment transported by six trucks was inbound for humanitarian purposes, before it was seized at the Nimule border entry point.

“The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards, through its Nimule Station has successfully facilitated the re-exportation of a consignment of white sorghum found to be non-compliant with national standards for human consumption to the country of origin,” said SSNBS in a statement on Friday.

It noted that the consignment underwent a destination inspection and a conformity assessment, which included laboratory tests and analysis.

“The results confirmed that the product failed to meet the required safety and quality benchmarks. Major areas of non-compliance included poor physical condition, presence of foreign matter, significant damage, and unacceptable overall appearance,” it said.

SSNBS reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting public health and maintaining the integrity of goods in circulation through robust inspection, monitoring and enforcement measures.

The regulatory body was established to ensure that imports meet the requirements of the technical regulations and applicable standards to prevent the importation of substandard goods.
