Youth leaders urge parties to recommit to peace implementation

A coalition of 20 national youth organizations have called on parties to recommit towards the implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, despite ongoing political tension in the country.
“It is very important that the government of South Sudan and the opposition don't deviate from this agreement. They have to continue implementing it because the agreement itself is comprehensive,” said Peter Malir Biar, Chairperson for South Sudan Youth Organizations in an interview last week.

A coalition of 20 national youth organizations have called on parties to recommit towards the implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, despite ongoing political tension in the country.

“It is very important that the government of South Sudan and the opposition don’t deviate from this agreement. They have to continue implementing it because the agreement itself is comprehensive,” said Peter Malir Biar, Chairperson for South Sudan Youth Organizations in an interview last week.

Malir stated that the 2018 peace deal is the only hope for the South Sudanese to elect their leaders.

“The government and the opposition have promised to never force people out of South Sudan again, and currently elections cannot take place when the parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement are fighting,” he said.

“So it is very important that if the government and the opposition want to have people of South Sudan go for elections and the people of South Sudan choose their leaders, then they should implement the agreement,” he added.

Malir emphasized the need for the leaders to dialogue to resolve their grievances amicably.

He stressed the need for the government to address the intermittent ethnic violence that threatens to derail implementation of the fragile peace deal.

“They should make sure all the structures of the agreement are in place so that people of South Sudan continue to enjoy this relative peace, and that people of South Sudan continue to identify the gaps where the country is not able to again go back to war,” said Malir.
