The undersecretary in the national ministry of Peacebuilding, Pia Phillip Michael, on Saturday announced plans to hold peace conference aimed to bring reconciliation among communities in Greater Tombura and Yambio Counties.
Speaking to the media in Yambio, Michael said the peace conference is a significant step toward restoring lasting peace in Tombura, following deadly ethnic violence that displaced thousands of residents since mid-2021.
“The people of Tombura have suffered greatly. Many have been forced to flee their homes, losing their properties and loved ones. We are working tirelessly to bring lasting peace to these communities, especially as they struggle to engage in this year’s agricultural season,” Michael said.
He emphasized the need to preserve peace across the state.
“I want to assure the community of Western Equatoria, especially Tombura, that we are committed to restoring lasting peace through dialogue, which will be hosted in Yambio and Tombura,” Michael said.
Michael disclosed that conflict has disrupted agricultural activities in Western Equatoria State, adding that the national government is exerting efforts to protect citizens in order to ensure they farm peacefully.
Michael who celebrated Easter festival in Yambio to celebrate called on residents to maintain peace in the State.
He assured the public that both the state and national governments are working hand in hand to ensure safety and long-term peace for all communities.
