The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) on Sunday said it has regained control of Nasir town, Upper Nile State following intense fighting with the White Army militia since February, 2025.

“On behalf of SSPDF command, the national army spokesman would like to officially announce to own rank and file and the members of the public on re-liberation of the historical town of Nasir,” said Maj. Gen Lul Ruai Koang, SSPDF spokesperson in a statement.

He disclosed that the recapture of Nasir is the greatest Easter gift for servicemen who had paid the ultimate price during its defense and recapture.

Attempt to reach both the White army group and the main armed opposition; Sudan People’s Liberation Army- in Opposition (SPLA-IO) for comment over the latest development was futile by press time.

In March 2025, intense fighting broke out in Nasir town between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces and the White Army, a community militia the government claims to be linked to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army- in Opposition led by First Vice President, Riek Machar.

The announcement by the SSPDF comes days after the military claimed control of the headquarters of neighboring Ulang County following a week-long battle with the White Army.

The fighting in Nasir which led to the killing of 27 SSPDF soldiers including a UN crew member on March 7, during an evacuation mission caused the arrest of several SPLM/A-IO officials including Machar, who is currently under house arrest.

The SSPDF together with the Uganda People’s Defense Forces launched aerial bombardments of Nasir, Ulang and Longechuk areas to flush out the White Army militia.
