The former Deputy Governor of Western Equatoria State, Dr. Gaaniko Kennedy Baime, has sent his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.

Baime described the loss as a painful moment not only for the global Catholic Church but also for South Sudan and the people of Western Equatoria State.

“We are mourning the passing of a great man of peace,” Baime said. “The Pope was a symbol of unity and hope, and his efforts toward promoting everlasting peace in our country will never be forgotten,” Baime said in a statement on Thursday.

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday.

Baime asked Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio and all citizens of Western Equatoria State to pray for the soul of the late Pope and to uphold his legacy of peace and reconciliation.

He recalled the Pope kissing the feet of President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, saying it was a powerful gesture to encourage peace in the country.

“The Pope’s actions were more than symbolic. He dedicated himself to helping South Sudan find a peaceful path forward. We must not let his words and deeds fade away,” Baime said.

He appealed to the people of Western Equatoria State to honor Pope Francis by embracing peace, forgiveness and unity.

Baime also commended the Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, for consistently promoting peace.

In addition, he encouraged church leaders to perform their role in spiritual guidance and peace building.
