Yei Health Sciences Institute (YHSI) on Wednesday graduated 115 students in the fields of nursing, midwifery and medical laboratory technology.
Emmanuel Taban Seme, the Commissioner of Yei River County, who presided over the graduation ceremony of the 23rd batch, emphasized the need to strengthen health training institutions across South Sudan.
In a statement on Thursday, Seme encouraged the health institute to expand academic programs and called on the national government to absorb qualified health graduates into the civil service to enhance healthcare delivery.
Suzanne Mandong, the Officer- in- Charge for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) urged the graduates to serve communities with compassion, competence and courage.
“You are the heartbeat of a healthier South Sudan. The health of a nation rests in your hands, and we are all better for it,” Mandong said.
Kuol Ajok, the Principal of Yei Health Sciences Institute said the institute was established in 1995 in Chukudum, Eastern Equatoria State and was relocated in 1999 to Yei town of Central Equatoria State.
Ajok disclosed that they offer diploma programs in nursing, midwifery, laboratory technology, clinical medicine and pharmacy.
He also revealed that they plan to admit more students in the June 2025.
Janet Michael, the Director General for Nursing and Midwifery in the National Ministry of Health, applauded the resilience of Yei Health Science Institute staff and urged stakeholders to continue to provide support for the institute.
Among the students who graduated include 67 females and 48 males, with 25 of them graduating as medical laboratory technicians, 57 registered nurses and 33 midwives.
Yei Health Sciences Institute is supported by UNFPA, Government of Canada, Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NMFA) and Amref Health Africa, among other development partners.
