The Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, has reached an agreement with a joint delegation from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to enhance food production.
Governor Kok emphasized the crucial role of agriculture in the state’s economic agenda, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve agricultural practices, increase productivity, and attract investments in the sector.
“My administration is deliberate and strategic in shaping agricultural policies. We recognize agriculture as a key driver of food security, youth employment, and economic growth. This is why we are committed to building partnerships that enhance capacity and deliver sustainable benefits to our people,” Kok said in a statement on Thursday after signing the deal with partners at the state secretariat.
Kok also disclosed that Jonglei State is focused on enhancing food security, promoting agricultural development, and reiterating its commitment to intentional and strategic agricultural policies.
Meshack Malo, the Country Representative of UNFAO in South Sudan, commended the Jonglei State Government for its collaborative efforts toward advancing agricultural development and improving livelihoods.
Malo said that UNFAO is ready to collaborate with Jonglei State in implementing innovative and strategic agricultural programs aimed at improving crop production and agricultural practices, as well as enhancing the socioeconomic status of the people.
“The UNFAO, in partnership with WHO and UNMISS, is working to develop critical agricultural value chains to foster youth employment, empower women, and uplift the people of Jonglei State,” said Malo.
The meeting between the governor and partners was attended by the Secretary General to the State Government, Kur Ayuen Kou, UNMISS team leader Geetha Pious, state cabinet ministers, and other partners.
