President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday tasked the newly appointed Transport Minister, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, with expediting the development of the Naivasha Dry Port in neighboring Kenya. This initiative aims to facilitate cargo transport to South Sudan.

“President Kiir instructed Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin to accelerate the development of South Sudan’s dry port in Naivasha, Kenya,” stated a release from the Presidential Press Unit.

President Kiir emphasized that operationalizing the dry port will enhance cargo handling and ease transport logistics, which are essential for addressing the rising cost of commodities in the country.

The Naivasha Inland Container Depot, commonly known as the Naivasha Dry Port, is directly connected to Mombasa port by railway and road. It spans over 1,000 acres and has the capacity to handle more than 2 million tonnes of cargo annually.

During the swearing-in ceremony on Friday, President Kiir directed the new Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Madut Biar Yel, to introduce innovative reforms aimed at revitalizing the country’s tertiary education system.

Both Minister of Transport Lam Akol Ajawin and Minister of Higher Education Madut Biar Yel pledged their commitment to improving the performance of their respective ministries for the benefit of the nation.

The new Transport Minister, Dr. Ajawin, is the leader of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) under the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) and previously served as Minister of Agriculture and Food Security before resigning in 2016.
