The Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro visited the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the South Sudan border, where he engaged with Christian communities from both nations.

During his visit on Sunday, Bishop Hiiboro underscored the vital need for peace, unity, and cooperation among the Congolese and South Sudanese communities residing along the border.

He encouraged people on both sides to focus on development, highlighting the deep cultural and social ties that bind them.

The bishop urged parents  to prioritize education and agriculture.

“Send your children to school and teach them how to cultivate the land,” he said. “Education is the key to life. A community that educates its children is building a brighter future.”

He further stressed the importance of language exchange and mutual understanding, encouraging both Congolese and South Sudanese to learn each other’s languages.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Samuel Lipombo, Parish Priest of Duru Parish in Congo, warmly welcomed the bishop’s visit.

“We need peace and good collaboration among ourselves. This border is crucial for both countries and can serve as a gateway to faster development.”

Fr. Lipombo also underscored the importance of maintaining relationships. “Our connection should not end here. It must continue until we achieve lasting peace, free movement, and real progress in our communities.”

Additionally, the Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Hon. Bakoyogo Morris Severino, appreciated the bishop’s visit to the border and his interaction with Christians from both Congo and South Sudan.

“We are happy to be here today, May 11, 2025, to celebrate Mass with you. This border is very important for both of us; let us join hands to bring peace and forgiveness,” Morris said.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tambura Yambio traveled with priests, the Minister of Roads and Bridges, the Minister of Housing, and the Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, among others.

This visit marks a renewed commitment to cross-border unity and cooperation, as faith leaders and communities strive to transform a historically fragile area into a model of peace and growth.
