The Deputy Minister of Interior, Gen. Mangar Buong, called for unity in the plans for the May 16 commemoration.

After meeting with SPLM First Deputy Chairman and Secretary General James Wani Igga, Buong spoke to the press, highlighting the collective commitment of SPLM organs to coordinate the commemorative events.

“We have reached a broad consensus across SPLM structures to mark this important day in a unified and inclusive manner,” he said. “May 16 is not just a day for the SPLM; it is a day of national importance for all South Sudanese. It reminds us of our collective journey and the sacrifices made for freedom.”

Gen. Buong led a high-level delegation to the office of SPLM First Deputy Chairman and Secretary General James Wani Igga as part of preparations for the upcoming May 16 commemoration, a historic date marking the founding of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in 1983.

The meeting, held in Juba, brought together senior officials from the SPLM National Youth League, SPLM Veterans, and representatives of the Red Army League. Discussions focused on organizing a unified and inclusive national event to honor the legacy of the liberation struggle and reinforce the values of unity and patriotism.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the SPLM National Youth League, Daniel Abucha Ali, made a passionate call for public participation in the upcoming national celebration, set to take place at Rock City Field Ground in Juba. The event, he emphasized, is not just a celebration but a significant moment to reflect on the roots and foundations of the nation.

“This day marks the foundation and the root of our nation,” Ali said with pride. “It is a time to honor those who fought for our freedom and shaped the path to independence.” His message echoed the importance of unity, urging citizens, particularly the youth, to come together in large numbers for the event. He stressed that this celebration goes beyond merely commemorating a date; it is about recognizing the struggles and sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes who paved the way for the freedom enjoyed today.

Ali also reminded the public that their participation is crucial in preserving the country’s history and ensuring that future generations understand the significance of their shared heritage. “We call on everyone to join us, to celebrate not only our history but also the bright future ahead,” he added. The event promises to be a memorable occasion for the people of South Sudan.

The May 16 commemoration will feature keynote addresses, cultural performances, and tributes to the veterans and martyrs of the liberation movement.
