The Vice President and Chair for the Economic Cluster Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, On Tuesday met with Prof. Abednego Akok, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), to discuss preparations for the upcoming general elections.
The meeting at the Office of the Vice President in Juba on Tuesday discussed the path forward for the general elections scheduled for December 2026.
A statement from the Office of the Vice President noted, “Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel held a consultative meeting with the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, Prof. Abednego Akok Kacuol, to review ongoing preparations for the upcoming general elections.”
The meeting also focused on resource mobilization to ensure timely and credible elections in December 2026.
During the meeting, Prof. Akok presented a comprehensive report outlining key milestones achieved over the past two years and the roadmap for conducting the election.
The Vice President assured the NEC of his full support in ensuring the Commission is adequately resourced and empowered to fulfill its mandate.
Bol emphasized that conducting peaceful, fair, and credible elections is the cornerstone of democratic consolidation and lasting stability in the country.
“The success of these elections depends on a collective commitment to ensure that every South Sudanese voice is heard, every vote counts, and that together, we build a future rooted in peace, democracy, and inclusive governance.”
In November of last year, the signatories to the peace agreement unanimously agreed to extend the transitional period to early 2027, with national elections scheduled for December 2026.
