The mobile network operator, MTN South Sudan, has launched its first network in Abuyung Payam of Awerial County since the country’s independence, aiming to improve communication access.
The network was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Commissioner of Awerial County, Philip Mawut Garang, in Abuyung Payam.
Mawut said that this is the first network of its kind for the community of Abuyung Payam.
“The community in Abuyung has suffered for so long without a network; it has been difficult for county authorities to assist when there is insecurity due to the lack of mobile connectivity,” Mawut told The Dawn in an interview on Thursday.
He explained that the installation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of MTN mobile operator, the National Ministry of Information, the state government, the USAF, and the National Communication Authority (NCA).
“The network was supposed to be operational since last year with the installation of a cell tower, but it was delayed due to insufficient budget to purchase a microwave antenna,” he said.
Mawut added, “I made this request for a mobile network back in 2019. During the 32 states initiative, we presented our document to the National Ministry of Information requesting a mobile network, and it was approved.”
“We were granted one network, which we installed in Kal-thok Payam. Now that Abuyung has a network, we are left with Magok Payam.”
He emphasized that the mobile network will facilitate communication and reduce insecurity.
“It is beneficial for the community of Awerial to be connected so they can communicate issues related to insecurity and stay in touch with their loved ones and relatives,” he said.
Mawut encouraged the residents of Abuyung to take care of the equipment.
“I urge the community to maintain this network diligently, as assets require upkeep to function properly. They should secure and continuously monitor it,” he said.
He also mentioned that the network will enhance communication and boost the business of the MTN mobile operator.
“The installation of this mobile network will stimulate MTN’s business through increased cell usage, especially since we have a large population in Abuyung.”
