The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) has confiscated 11 commercial trucks transporting substandard and smuggled fuels intended for Juba from Uganda.

In a statement released on Monday, the regulatory body confirmed that the fuel did not meet the required East African standards.

“The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS), in line with its mandate under the National Bureau of Standards Act, 2012, intercepted a consignment of 11 fuel trucks at the Nimule Port of Entry during a routine inspection,” it stated.

It said that the consignment failed to meet quality standards after undergoing standard quality assessment procedures, which included laboratory tests and analysis.

“In accordance with the bureau’s mandate to safeguard public health, protect the environment, and ensure consumer safety, the decision was made to re-export the substandard fuel to its country of origin.”

SSNBS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and maintaining the integrity of goods and fuels in circulation through robust inspection, monitoring, and enforcement measures.

“The SSNBS remains steadfast in its dedication to ensuring that only quality-assured and standards-compliant products are permitted into the South Sudanese market,” it said.

“We extend our gratitude to our enforcement partners, stakeholders, and the public for their continued cooperation and support in upholding national standards.”

The regulatory body was established to ensure that imports meet the requirements of technical regulations and applicable standards, thereby preventing the importation of substandard goods.
