Local authorities in Jonglei State expressed deep sorrow on Monday following the death of Deng Mabeny Kuot, the former commissioner of Twic East County.
Mabeny passed away from liver cancer on the night of May 18 at Juba Teaching Hospital in Juba.
In his condolence message, Juach Arok Juach, the current Commissioner of Twic East County, honored Mabeny as a figure of strength and dedication.
“On behalf of Twic East County and myself, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of Twic East County, Jonglei State, and South Sudan as a whole,” Arok said.
Arok disclosed that Mabeny had been battling illness since his tenure as commissioner of Twic East.
“Our hearts go out to the grieving families, and to the void he has left in our community. Hon. Deng Mabeny Kuot was a towering figure of strength and dedication,” he stated.
He noted that the late Mabeny left an enduring legacy that will be cherished by future generations.
“During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Hon. Deng Mabeny, who shared many great moments with him.”
“We stand in solidarity with those mourning the loss of Hon. Deng Mabeny; we unite in remembering his extraordinary contributions to the community and our country,” he added.
Mamer Abraham Yuang, acting chairman of the Twic East Youth Association, also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Mabeny.
“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Hon. Deng Mabeny Kuot. He will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and Twic East County as a whole,” Abraham said in a condolence message seen by Dawn on Monday.
“Additionally, I officially declare a three-day mourning period and suspend validation and campaigning from May 19, 2025, to May 21, 2025. Validation and campaigning will resume on May 22, 2025.”
Mabeny, 51, served as commissioner of Twic East County from 2021 to 2023 and also held the position of commissioner of the defunct Twic North County during the era of 32 states.
