The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Field Office in Lakes State on Tuesday, officially handed over a mini water yard facility to St. Paul Girls Primary School in Awerial County.

This new water yard will supply clean drinking water to more than 697 students and the surrounding community.

The initiative is part of U.N. efforts to improve access to clean water and sanitation for learners. The project, constructed by the MRK Drilling Company, was funded by UNMISS.

On Tuesday, Christopher Murenga, Head of the UNMISS Field Office in Lakes State, handed over the facility to the school  Management in Mingkaman.

In his address, Murenga urged the school administration and the community to take care of the water facility.

Bishop David Akau Kuol, Episcopal Bishop of the Awerial Diocese and founder of St. Paul Girl Primary School, praised UNMISS for the donation.

“The UNMISS is supporting development and peace in South Sudan, so I really appreciate them,” Akau told Dawn in a phone interview from Mingkaman on Wednesday.

He noted that the facility will not only provide clean drinking water to the learners at the school but will also benefit the surrounding community.

“It’s not just St. Paul Girl Primary School; we also have Mingkaman Primary School, which serves both girls and boys. This facility will serve both schools and the community as well.”

Akau expressed concern about overcrowding due to a lack of classrooms.

“We don’t have enough classes, and we also need more support to ensure our girls are safe when they come to school. These are the challenges facing girls in schools.”
