Two SSPDF soldiers accused of assaulting’s UNMISS staff in Yambio

The Government of Western Equatoria State has strongly condemned the recent assault on a female staff member of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Yambio Town. The attack occurred on Monday and was perpetrated by two soldiers from the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF).

The Government of Western Equatoria State has strongly condemned the recent assault on a female staff member of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Yambio Town. The attack occurred on Monday and was perpetrated by two soldiers from the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).

The acting governor and Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement, Hon. James Severino Morris, expressed deep regret over the incident, offering sincere apologies to the victim, her family, and the broader UNMISS community.

He  assured the public and international partners that the perpetrators have been apprehended and are currently in the custody of the SSPDF. Authorities emphasized that a swift investigation is underway to ensure justice is served.

Morris described the incident as a violation of human rights, international cooperation, and the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between South Sudan and the UN.

He acknowledged the vital role of UN personnel in supporting peace and humanitarian aid efforts in South Sudan.

He reaffirmed its commitment to peace, law, and collaboration with global partners, stressing the importance of discipline among security forces. Officials urged SSPDF leadership to coordinate with civilian authorities to prevent such violations in the future.

“A call was also made for all organized forces to uphold the dignity and protection of international staff and civilians”  he said

The Western Equatoria government concluded its statement by reiterating its dedication to justice, accountability, and the safety of all people in the region.
