"We Dare where others fear"

South Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Cecilia Adut Manyot, has warned that the continued renewal of UN sanctions is deterring investors and frustrating local entrepreneurs.
Speaking at a UN Security Council session in New York on Saturday, Amb. Adut said young South Sudanese are especially disheartened by the ongoing restrictions, which they view as a major obstacle to economic progress and private sector growth.
AMB. Adut said the continued renewal of sanctions is discouraging investors from investing in the country.
She added that young South Sudanese entrepreneurs have expressed their frustration over the ongoing existence of the sanctions on the country.
“Just a few days ago, I received a message from a young South Sudanese entrepreneur who expressed his frustration that the continued existence of the sanctions discourages foreign investors from engaging with his businesses,” Adut said.
Adut made these remarks after the United Nations Security Council voted on Friday to extend sanctions and an arms embargo on South Sudan for another year.
The U.N. Security Council extended a resolution to renew the sanctions imposed on South Sudan despite opposition from Juba and abstentions from council members, including African states, China, and Russia.
The sanctions include asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms embargo.
The resolution called for renewing sanctions on South Sudan until 31 May 2026.
Adut said South Sudanese expressed their disappointment over the U.N. Security Council’s decision to renew the arms embargo and targeted sanctions.
“People who claim to understand our problems better than we do, the South Sudanese, are preparing to decide how we should live our lives. Let it be clear that we are not asking for a blank cheque.”
She said the citizens are seeking a fair opportunity and a balanced approach that supports peace efforts and economic renewal.
“We are asking for a fair opportunity and a balanced approach that supports the efforts of those who are working for peace and economic renewal. Let us not forget that sustainable peace cannot exist without livelihoods, without hope, and without opportunities.”
