The sixth edition of the much-anticipated Yambio Inter-Area Tournament 2025 was officially launched at Yambio Freedom Square, drawing crowds of sports enthusiasts under the theme “Promoting Youth Togetherness.”
Speaking at the vibrant opening ceremony, the Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State, Hon. James Severino Morris, highlighted the tournament’s vital role in fostering unity, peace, and cooperation among diverse communities.
He urged fans to support their respective areas peacefully and to steer clear of hate speech, tribalism, and insults during matches.
“I urge all fans to avoid singing funeral songs during the game; it doesn’t make any sense. Let’s sing only football songs to boost the morale of the players on the pitch,” Severino said.
Hon. Morris called for a spirit of sportsmanship. He further encouraged everyone to embrace unity, using football as an example: “Let’s all focus on the ball. Even when you kick it several times, the ball does not complain. Let us love ourselves in the same way, without discrimination.”
The tournament’s opening match saw Baikparu Area face off against Naagori I Area, with Baikparu Area securing a 2–0 victory in regular time.
This year’s edition has registered thirty-six residential areas for the 2025 tournament.
This year’s tournament has drawn unprecedented support, with contributions flowing in from various stakeholders. The State Government, Hon. Mboriman, TK Sport in Juba, and Francis Felix Katie have already made donations, while others continue to express interest in supporting the event.
The Yambio Inter-Area Tournament remains a vital platform for promoting harmony, talent development, and community spirit, turning football into more than just a game, but a unifying force for the youth of Western Equatoria State.
