An attack by suspected armed youths from neighbouring Jonglei state in Manyabol, Gumuruk County, Greater Pibor Administrative Area, has resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals, the abduction of seven, and the raiding of 1,200 cattle.

David Ngiro Yangkon, the chairperson of the Murle Community Youth Association, stated that the attack occurred in the Ngorok area of Manyabol Payam in Gumuruk County, leaving seven people abducted, including women and children.

“The attack happened abruptly; three households were targeted. Nine people were killed, and seven women and children were abducted, along with a number of cattle looted. The case has been reported to the authorities of the county,” said Yangkon in an interview on Monday.

Yangkon revealed that this latest deadly attack in Manyabol Payam of Gumuruk County under the Greater Pibor Administrative Area is the third since a similar attack occurred in January this year.

“We want the authorities to ensure the recovery of the cows and to protect women and children. We need the administration to make sure that the situation is not provoked and that we achieve lasting peace,” he said.

Ngachuno Ngachagoi Lanyanga, the acting commissioner of Gumuruk County, stated that the attack must be stopped to ensure peaceful coexistence between Jonglei and the Pibor Administrative Area.

“Therefore, the leadership of Gumuruk County stands firm in rejecting violence and calls for a continued commitment to peaceful coexistence. I urge the youth of Manyabol and Gumuruk County at large to remain calm,” said Lanyanga.

“We call upon the government of Jonglei state to swiftly investigate this cowardly attack and bring the perpetrators to justice. We urge our capable national government to redouble their efforts to address the root causes of violence,” he added.

Efforts to reach the Jonglei state government for comment have not been fruitful during press time.
