Lakes State police welcomed their newly appointed commissioner, Maj. Gen. Chol Atem, who was installed in his office on Monday.

The former police commissioner of Lakes State, Maj. Gen. Elia Costa Faustino, who currently serves as the Director General for Nationality, Passport, and Immigration, commended the people of Rumbek for their strong cooperation during his tenure in Lakes State.

Gen. Faustino assured the newly appointed police commissioner that security in Lakes State is stable but emphasised the need for police commitment to uphold law and order against anyone who might threaten peace and unity.

He noted that there are certain hotspot areas that require the deployment of well-armed, trained police officers to protect the lives and property of residents.

Furthermore, Gen. Faustino explained in an interview with Dawn that the appointment of Maj. Gen. Chol Atem as police commissioner was part of arrangements made at the national level by the Ministry of Interior.

Gen. Faustino also oversaw the graduation of eleven female drivers, a significant achievement, as it is quite rare for such a number to graduate in Rumbek. They are the first batch of police drivers in South Sudan and are now entitled to operate police vehicles.
