Civil society organisations have urged the government and peace guarantors to swiftly establish the Commission for Truth, Reconciliation and Healing (CTRH) and the Compensation and Reparation Authority (CRA).
“We call upon the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) to urgently appoint candidates with integrity and impartiality to the CTRH and CRA, as stipulated in Chapter Five of the agreement,” said civil society activists in a statement on Thursday.
“We also call on the Selection Panel to complete its work as swiftly and transparently as possible,” the statement continued.
The civil society groups also demanded the immediate release of Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon, the First Vice President, and all political detainees.
“We call on all parties, including the incumbent TGoNU, SPLM/A-IO, SSOA, FDs, and OPP, to resume dialogue to end ongoing violence and uphold peace,” they added.
The civil society groups urged UNMISS, the AU, the UN, and the EU to increase support for civil society organisations to engage
communities across South Sudan in transitional justice processes.
“The South Sudanese youth, civil society, and religious leaders from diverse organisations across the country call upon the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) to ensure the appointment of candidates with integrity, impartiality, and inclusivity to these two critical transitional justice bodies,” the statement concluded.
The Centre for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), with support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Human Rights Division, held a three-day workshop at Fire Tree Hotel under the theme: “Strengthening the Capacity of Youth and Civil Society Organisations on African Union Transitional Justice in South Sudan.”
