Typically, we consider what our leaders can do for us, rather than what we can do for them. In the case of President Salva Kiir, it’s time to reflect on what we can offer him.

President Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit played a pivotal role in achieving independence, leading to the birth of the Republic of South Sudan. As citizens, we should adopt a mindset similar to that of Kenyans, who have honored their national figures by naming institutions and roads after them, such as Kenyatta, whose name is associated with a university, a hospital, an airport, and various streets. In South Sudan, what gifts can we give to our President, who, through his sacrifices and unwavering commitment, secured our independence?

On this historic occasion, gifts need not be material; they can instead honor the vision, leadership, and dedication that President Kiir has shown in our nation’s quest for freedom and progress. The most meaningful gifts often come from the heart and reflect our shared values. For a leader who has worked tirelessly to bring freedom, end conflict, and usher in a new era of stability, we are inspired to strive for a brighter and stronger future.

One significant gift the people can offer the President is appreciation, which can be institutionalized through public recognition in South Sudan. We recognize that he has also brought peace and pledged not to lead the nation into war again. This commitment should be recorded as a vital achievement in our nation’s history, showcasing his leadership and humanity in fostering peace.

Furthermore, citizens can gift the President the commitment to become peacekeepers in their homes, communities, and regions. This means rejecting violence, choosing dialogue, and standing against those who aim to divide our country. If every citizen takes on the role of a guardian of peace, the President’s legacy will transcend mere political achievement; it will become a living reality in every village and town.

Secondly, the country can offer a meaningful, lasting gift by establishing the Salva Kiir Mayardit Institute for Peace and Liberation Struggle. This institute could function as a national center for peace, research, dialogue, leadership training, and conflict resolution. It would educate future generations on the importance of peace and equip young South Sudanese with the skills to prevent future conflicts, ensuring that children in every village recognize who brought them independence and allows them to enjoy their freedom. Ideally located in Juba or another state, the institute would serve as a permanent reminder of the sacrifices made and the peace achieved by H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Thirdly, citizens can gift the President the responsibility of nation-building by actively participating in the process. Rebuilding the economy, investing in education, and supporting local development all demonstrate a population committed to building on the foundation of peace. These actions carry more significance than any medal or monument.

Finally, a National Day of Peace and Thanksgiving could be established, observed annually to commemorate the journey from war to peace and to honor all who contributed to this effort, including the President.
