The Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation, Edmund Yakani has called on the National Communication Authority (NCA) to investigate the newly implemented telecommunication tariffs.

“I would like to bring to the attention of the leadership of the National Communication Authority a concern regarding the telecommunication tariffs. It appears that these tariffs have been increased without any public notice or explanation,” Yakani stated in an interview on Thursday.

“Many people are complaining about the rise in tariff rates and are not being informed; this is why we urge the leadership of the National Communication Authority to review these rates,” he added.

Yakani highlighted that telecommunication services provide numerous opportunities beyond mere communication, noting that they offer young people employment prospects through various social media platforms.

“Young people who are trading online via Facebook are facing challenges reaching their clients and advertising their businesses. The tariffs are impacting the online businesses that rely on telecommunication services,” he explained.

On July 8, 2025, telecommunication companies in South Sudan—MTN South Sudan, Zain, and Digitel Holdings—raised tariffs on mobile airtime and internet services due to the ongoing increase in the exchange rate within the foreign exchange market.

The current phases of price adjustments implemented by the telecommunication operators began on July 8, 2025, followed by adjustments on August 7, and concluding on September 6, 2025. These changes have resulted in increased costs for internet and mobile subscriptions.

Late last year, similar adjustments in telecommunication tariffs by the three companies were made in response to the rise in the Central Bank’s official exchange rates, occurring in three phases from October to December 2024.
