The Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, has raised concern over the worsening food crisis in flood-affected areas, calling for urgent intervention and support from humanitarian organizations.
“The dire humanitarian situation across the state, particularly in areas severely impacted by flooding and displacement, such as Fangak, Ayod, and Pigi, has led to increased humanitarian needs, especially among returnees who face significant challenges upon resettling from Nasir,” said Kok during a strategic meeting on Friday with Albino Akol Atak, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.
Kok also briefed the Minister on recent incidents in Nasir that have resulted in further displacement and pledged coordinated support in the form of essential supplies and health interventions.
He praised the Minister’s proactive response, highlighting the positive impact of planned relief efforts, particularly for returnees in Fangak who face urgent needs for food, shelter, and medical assistance.
Albino Akol Atak, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to respond swiftly and efficiently to the humanitarian crises affecting the nine counties of Jonglei.
Atak noted that the support provided by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has strengthened coordination and partnerships, ensuring that the humanitarian response in Jonglei is poised to improve the lives of affected communities.
“Jonglei State continues to be one of the regions hardest hit by climate change due to its location along the Nile. Together with our partners and in collaboration with local authorities, we are determined to reduce vulnerabilities caused by flooding and outbreaks such as cholera,” said Atak.
