The Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State, H.E. Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, issued a stern warning on Tuesday, urging social media users to refrain from spreading misinformation.

In his press release, he emphasised the potential harm that false updates can cause to public order and the state’s stability.

Badagbu stated that, over the past weeks, rumours have circulated on social media, and he believes it is essential to clarify the situation and speak openly about what is happening.

“WES has been facing serious security challenges, particularly in areas affected by the SPLM-IO forces,” he said.

A series of attacks, especially road ambushes and targeted violence, have resulted in the loss of innocent lives in Greater Tambura, Yambio, Maridi, and Greater Mundri.

Badagbu added that, in Mundri East, calm has been restored; however, the SPLM-IO under Futuyo continues to attack our bases and military posts in and around Tambura, including Mupoi, Nambara Bridge, Naita, and Mabia.

“Our forces continue to act in self-defence. I’m happy to report that Ketiba is now secure and that the road between Juba and Mundri is safe for travel. This is a significant step forward for our people, trade, and movement in the region,” Rimbasa said.

He noted that, in recent weeks, the situation in Tambura County remains tense, but our forces are actively working to protect civilians from SPLM-IO fighters who continue to threaten the stability of the people of Tambura.

“I have made the temporary decision to relocate my office to Tambura County to ensure that peace returns to the area. Our goal is clear: to restore peace and stability in Tambura and ensure that families can return,” he stated.

However, Badagbu mentioned that 73 members of SPLM-IO have officially defected to SPLM-IG in Nvolo County.

“On behalf of the SPLM in Western Equatoria State, I would like to welcome them. Their decision to join us is a sign of growing unity and a shared desire to move forward,” he remarked.

He added that Western Equatoria State will not go to war this time; everyone needs peace so that development can progress more swiftly.

“The State and National Government are working hard for lasting peace for everyone”
