The Director of Veterinary Services in the Lakes State Ministry of Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism, Mr. Ruben Makoi Yuol, has issued a warning regarding the sale and use of unlicensed veterinary drugs, highlighting the associated risks to animal health and public safety.

In an exclusive interview on Sunday, Yuol stated that individuals operating drug businesses for humans and animals without the necessary skills and knowledge are not permitted to prescribe medications for animals.

“There is a withdrawal period specified for these drugs, and when used improperly by non-veterinarians, it can be detrimental. However, many are selling animal medicines without the required licences from the Ministry of Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism,” said Yuol.

He urged the state government, led by H.E. Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor, to support the ministry by providing suitable infrastructure for animal operations. The ministry currently lacks operational rooms and is working in unsuitable environments, which can hinder the successful treatment of animals.

Yuol confirmed the recovery of an operated calf from last month, advising the owner to migrate it to the cattle camps after three months due to the long-distance migration, which could potentially cause health complications.

“The state Ministry of Animal Resources, Fisheries and Tourism is working diligently to ensure the health of livestock. It is essential for livestock owners to accompany their animals to facilitate the early detection of illnesses and to follow the given instructions. Monitoring and follow-up treatment are the responsibility of the ministry’s staff,” said Yuol.

Hon. Kedit Mado Kedit, a member of the state legislative assembly representing the Matangai constituency No. 6 in Rumbek Central County, expressed gratitude to the Directorate of Veterinary Services for their effective operation and thorough supervision during the calf’s health challenges.

“The calf is now healthy and grazing well, and it is expected to be taken to the camp in January, following the provided instructions”
