The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced on Saturday the opening of the embassy in Tokyo, Japan, marking a historic milestone in diplomatic relations.
Speaking during the launch ceremony in Tokyo, Amb. Monday Semaya K. Kumba, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that the launch symbolises friendship, diplomacy, and a shared vision for a stronger partnership between South Sudan and Japan.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of Japan for their warm welcome and hospitality,” the embassy said in a statement issued on Saturday.
He praised the Juba envoy to Japan, Amb. Victoria Samuel Aru, and her team for their tireless efforts in maintaining the embassy amid challenges.
Semaya also encouraged them to continue working hard to raise South Sudan’s flag high in Japan.
“The relationship between South Sudan and Japan is strategic, strong, and built on partnership, covering political, economic, trade, and investment cooperation.”
For her part, Amb. Victoria Samuel Aru, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of South Sudan to Japan and Head of Mission, stated that this launch will strengthen the long-standing history of cooperation between the two countries, highlighting Japan’s support and collaboration.
“We reaffirm our commitment to work hand-in-hand with the Government of Japan to further strengthen the bonds of friendship and partnership.”
Amb. Horiuchi Toshihiko, Japan’s Assistant Minister and Director General of the African Affairs Department, underlined the strength of the bilateral relationship and assured Japan’s continued support and collaboration with Africa’s youngest nation.
Japan was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with South Sudan following the latter’s independence in 2011.
However, the bilateral relations date back to the Southern Sudan era under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005, when Japan initiated development and humanitarian cooperation projects.
Since then, the two countries have maintained and deepened their cordial relationships, including reciprocal visits by senior leadership.
