More than 1,000 civilians displaced by recent deadly violence in Payume and Marju sub-Bomas in Pokula, Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, are in dire need of humanitarian aid, an official said.
The civilians were displaced following recent violence between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-opposition (SPLA-IO) and the South Sudan People’s Defence Force (SSPDF) in Marju sub-Bomas in Pokula.
They are currently sheltering in public spaces, including Pokula Primary School.
Pokula Boma lies approximately 22 miles east of Yei town, while Marju Sub-Boma is about 17 miles southeast of Pokula.
Emmanuel Taban Seme, Yei River County Commissioner, said the displaced individuals, mainly children, women, and the elderly, including pregnant mothers, are in dire need of food, shelter, education, and healthcare.
“We have come on the ground with the security team to witness the suffering of our citizens. Many of them are sleeping in the open, without food, education, or medical care,” Taban said after visiting the displaced persons sheltering in Pokula Primary School on Friday.
Taban appealed to members of the community to assist the displaced with temporary shelters.
“This is a painful situation that requires an urgent humanitarian response,” he said.
For his part, Joseph Garang, SSPDF Commander, assured residents of the army’s readiness to restore stability and peace in the area.
“We are urging families to hold onto faith in God, because every suffering has an end,” said Garang.
The area has been affected by intermittent violence in recent years, with displacement often recurring during periods of heightened insecurity.
As of July 2025, the displaced families, most of whom left behind farming activities and assets, are in need of immediate food and non-food assistance.
The local economy is already under strain and cannot support the sudden increase in population.
