The Twic East Girls’ Association, known as “Nyan Cit Arialbeek,” has elected Ahou Abit Arok, also known as Ruth Muka, as its new chairperson for the term running from 2025 to 2027. She won with 51.1 per cent of the total votes cast.
Muka emerged victorious in a highly contested election held on Sunday, defeating Aluel Garang Awuol and Alek Yuot Deng, who secured 40.5 per cent and 7.7 per cent of the votes, respectively. The election took place in the suburb of Gumbo in Juba.
The Independent Electoral Committee declared Arok the winner in an election that registered a total of 1,053 votes, of which 919 were cast, while 134 remained uncast during the balloting process.
The election for the Twic East Girls’ Association was described as credible, free, and fair. Over the past few days, it has witnessed large gatherings accompanied by debates, dancing, and marches in public spaces.
Ahou Abit Arok, the newly elected chairperson of Nyan Cit Arialbeek, has stated her commitment to fulfilling her election promise by enrolling 12 girls in a boarding school at Promised Land Secondary School.
Arok also announced plans to enrol some girls in nursery and primary schools, as well as providing training in tailoring, following the donation of seven tailoring machines for the empowerment of girls.
The term “Nyan Cit Arialbeek,” meaning “a girl like the red crown crane,” signifies that a girl from Twic East is as beautiful as the crane and embodies qualities such as calmness and intelligence.
