President Salva Kiir Mayardit met on Wednesday with Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

Ambassador Monday Semaya K. Kumba, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that the two leaders engaged in extensive discussions focused on enhancing mutual cooperation in critical areas such as trade, regional security, and infrastructure development.

“Before his return to Juba, His Excellency the President conducted a very fruitful meeting with His Excellency Dr Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and the two leaders exchanged views on bilateral, regional, and international issues in a very cordial, productive, and promising manner,” Semaya told SSBC on Wednesday at Juba International Airport.

Semaya emphasised the importance of maintaining strong relations and fostering deeper economic and political ties between Juba and Addis Ababa.

He noted that while in Ethiopia, Kiir congratulated the Ethiopian people on the milestone achievement of completing the Renaissance Dam, stating that it will benefit Ethiopia, Africa, and the global community.

“He (Kiir) delivered a very remarkable speech in which he thanked the government and the people of Ethiopia for the invitation, and he also congratulated them on their great achievement.”

He added that Kiir also met with several leaders from Africa, including the presidents of Kenya, Djibouti, and Somalia, as well as the prime ministers of Barbados and the Kingdom of Eswatini, to discuss bilateral ties.

Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali, Ethiopian Prime Minister, mentioned that the meeting explored ways to strengthen cooperation and advance shared priorities between the two nations.

“This morning, I welcomed President Salva Kiir Mayardit of the Republic of South Sudan to my office for bilateral discussions. We explored ways to strengthen cooperation and advance shared priorities between our nations,” Ahmed said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Ethiopia and South Sudan share a relationship rooted in history, common struggles, and mutual solidarity.

Ethiopia stood firmly with the people of South Sudan during their long and difficult journey towards independence.

Both countries signed a security pact in August 2022, committing to promote bilateral relations on various issues without compromising safety and security.

The deal was signed between key security and law enforcement officials from both countries.
