The Commissioner of Mundri County in Western Equatoria State has called on armed groups operating in the area to lay down their weapons and pursue peace.

Speaking during the conclusion of a two-day consultation meeting with the state governor on Thursday, Zelipha Justin Dawa, Commissioner of Mundri West County, urged individuals who have taken up arms against the state to return home and contribute to peace and stability.

“I want to speak directly to those who have taken up guns. They have left us; let them come back because we have received peace in Western Equatoria. We do not want to see them holding guns in the bushes, nor do we want them to leave South Sudan,” Dawa stated.

She emphasised the importance of reconciliation in promoting peace among citizens.

“South Sudan belongs to all of us. Let them return so that we can share a message of peace and work together to build our country, particularly in Western Equatoria State,” she added.

James Al Taib Berapai, Governor of Western Equatoria State, pledged to use his authority to foster peace among the residents.

He expressed his commitment to ensuring security and encouraging social harmony in the region.

“We are here to tell our president and all the leaders at the national level that we have agreed to work hand in hand as the leadership of the state and the county commissioner to bring peace to our people in Western Equatoria and maintain the security and social harmony of the people of South Sudan living in Western Equatoria,” Al Taib said.

Western Equatoria has experienced significant violence, including killings and property destruction in several areas.

State officials have attributed much of the unrest to the rebellion led by former governor Futuyo, who is believed to be in hiding and has rallied armed opposition against the government.
