The Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs Adut Salva Kiir on Saturday encouraged women to take an active role in peacebuilding efforts to help restore harmony within society.
Adut made this statement during the Thanksgiving ceremony for her appointment.
The event was organised by the Bahr el Ghazal Women’s Leadership under the theme “Together we are the architects of peace and progress in nation-building.”
Adut acknowledged the important role women play in peacebuilding and reconciliation.
“The envoy emphasised the vital role of women in peacebuilding and reconciliation, highlighting the need for South Sudanese to engage in dialogue,” according to an official statement posted on Facebook.
She expressed that peace leads to development and called for shared responsibility to promote peaceful coexistence in the country.
She pledged “to serve the people, asserting that women, despite being a large and marginalised population, should be central to progress.”
Josephine Joseph Lagu, Vice President for the Service Cluster, praised President Kiir for appointing Adut as presidential envoy.
She expressed gratitude to the appointing authority for selecting women for senior leadership roles.
Lagu pointed out that Adut’s appointment comes at a challenging time for the country and encouraged her to empower young people.
Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior, Vice President for Gender, Youth, and Sports Cluster, noted that although Adut is not a politician, she will have the opportunity to learn and fulfil long-awaited promises.
Nyandeng urged Adut to support widows and children of veterans as part of her commitments.
