The State Minister for General Education and Instruction, Nelson Makoi Makur, officially inaugurated the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) training for teachers at Bros Hotel on Monday. This training aims to enhance the quality of education for learners across Lakes State.

The program, designed and funded by UNICEF and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), is implemented by the National Ministry of General Education of the Republic of South Sudan and is being rolled out across ten states and three administrative areas.

Speaking during the opening, Minister Makur emphasised the government’s commitment to quality education, asserting that all citizens have the right to access inclusive education.

He stated, “The program primarily assists individuals who dropped out without a primary education certificate. They are entitled to enroll in ALP, which provides alternative education to attain basic education and encourages learners to progress to higher levels. This initiative is for all citizens, including girls and individuals living with disabilities.”

Makur further noted that the training offers an opportunity for 42 teachers from Rumbek East and Yirol West counties to participate in a 10-day capacity-building program.

He urged participants to apply the skills acquired during the training effectively in their classrooms.

Ustaz Christopher Athian Door, a representative from the National Ministry of General Education and Instruction, stated that the training focuses on equipping teachers to deliver effective ALP instruction in the classroom.

“This intensive 10-day program must be completed successfully. Teachers should be fully committed, as quality educators plan lessons meticulously and ensure that instruction leads to certification or awards. Educators transform the face of society. South Sudanese teachers are among the most resilient members of our society, and we must take pride in them,” Door said.

Mr. Abraham Mabior Rioc, Project Manager for the Women Initiative for Development Organization (WIDOW), indicated that the ALP project will run for three years (2025–2028), with teachers undergoing 10-day training sessions each year.

He added, “ALP is a structured learning program introduced formally to help those who missed out on formal education catch up. Guidebooks will also be distributed to teachers after the training to ensure proper curriculum delivery.”
