South Sudan’s media fraternity is mourning the passing of veteran journalist Michael Koma, who died on Sunday after a short illness.

Widely respected for his dedication and decades of service to the nation’s media industry, Koma leaves behind a lasting legacy of professionalism and mentorship that has shaped generations of South Sudanese journalists.

Majak Daniel Kuany Alier, the Secretary General of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), has paid tribute to Koma.

“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Michael Koma, a respected journalist and mentor whose contributions to South Sudan’s media fraternity will be remembered for generations,” Alier stated on Monday.

“As a union, we have lost a compassionate storyteller, a prolific writer, and a media mentor of our time. His legacy will continue to live on through the journalists he guided and the stories he so passionately told,” he added.

Koang Palchang, the station manager of Eye Radio, remarked that Michael was undoubtedly one of the best editors and will be sorely missed by the entire media fraternity in South Sudan.

“We will remember his dedication while serving as news editor for publications like the Juba Monitor and The Dawn Newspaper. His commitment to media leadership was also evident in his long service as a member of the National Editors’ Forum since 2014,” Palchang noted.

“The passing of Michael Koma is shocking news to me. We worked together for a long time, and I learned a lot from him. His legacy will always be remembered, and his contributions will be deeply missed by the media fraternity in South Sudan,” said Benjamin Takpiny, one of the managers at The Dawn Daily Newspaper.

Koma was a distinguished newspaper columnist and a former editor of several newspapers in South Sudan, including The Dawn Newspaper, Juba Monitor, and The Witness newspaper, among others.
