South Sudan Officials Engage UN on Abyei Peace and Status

The High-Level Committee on Abyei’s final status, led by Pieng Deng Kuol, the Minister of East African Community Affairs, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, is currently in Ethiopia to brief the United Nations Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa on the situation in Abyei.

The High-Level Committee on Abyei’s final status, led by Pieng Deng Kuol, the Minister of East African Community Affairs, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, is currently in Ethiopia to brief the United Nations Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa on the situation in Abyei.

Apuk Ayuel Mayen, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, stated that the delegation is in Ethiopia to update the UN Special Envoy ahead of the upcoming Security Council meeting.

“Currently, Akuei Bona Malual, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, is in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as part of a delegation from the National Committee for the final status of Abyei, led by Pieng Deng Kuol, the Minister of East African Affairs and Deputy Chair of the Committee,” said Mayen.

“During the visit, the delegation met with His Excellency Guang Cong, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, to brief him on the situation in Abyei in advance of his forthcoming report to the United Nations Security Council,” Mayen added.

Mayen made these remarks during a press conference, where she provided an overview of official visits, bilateral meetings, regional missions, and multilateral engagements that have advanced the Republic of South Sudan’s foreign policy priorities and strengthened its international partnerships.

Mayen noted that President Salva Kiir Mayardit is currently in the United Arab Emirates on an official mission aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, boosting economic potential, and attracting trade and investment.

“His Excellency, President General Salva Kiir Mayardit, is on an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, where he is meeting with Emirati officials to enhance bilateral relations for increased trade and investment,” she said.

On October 28, 2025, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Monday Semaya K. Kumba, co-chaired a high-level forum with UNMISS, addressing the UN contingency plan.

Additionally, Mayen reported that the Republic of South Sudan has ratified its membership in the Africa Mineral Strategy Group, and the Minister has conducted diplomatic meetings with several dignitaries, including the Indian Ambassador and the Director-General of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority on Education, Scholarship, and International Aviation Forums.

“The Ministry’s activities in October 2025 reflect a multifaceted approach aimed at strengthening regional peace and security through engagement with Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, and other partners,” said Mayen.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation continues to advance the Republic of South Sudan’s diplomatic agenda through focused engagement, regional cooperation, and strategic multilateral outreach to support peace, stability, and sustainable development.
