"We Dare where others fear"

Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), has raised concerns regarding the delayed preparations for the upcoming 2026 general election.
“CEPO is issuing a serious political alert to the leaders who signed the 2018 peace agreement regarding the country’s readiness for the general election scheduled for December 2026. The National Elections Act, 2023, Section 41(1)(e) mandates the government to review and rename the new constituencies for the 2026 elections,” Yakani stated in a press release on Sunday.
“If this does not happen, Section 41(1)(f) will come into effect, requiring the use of the old 2010 constituencies for the December 2026 elections. There will be no further opportunities to extend the transitional period or postpone the elections,” he warned.
Yakani emphasised that political leaders must take immediate action to address the concerns surrounding the 2026 general elections.
“With only 13 months remaining, South Sudan requires decisive political actions from the signatories on key election-related issues. Clarity in the legal framework is essential for the National Election Commission (NEC) to establish a solid legal foundation for the electoral process,” he said.
“Resources and funding are crucial, along with an open civic and political space, including security measures to ensure a peaceful and inclusive electoral environment. Realistic plans based on feasibility are necessary, and compromises will be inevitable given the limited time left.”
