The Chairperson of the National Agenda and South Sudan Democratic Forum, as well as the national minister of cabinet affairs, Dr. Martin Elia, has expressed his condolences to the bereaved family of the late Uncle Bona Malwal Madut Ring, describing the loss as deeply felt not only by the family but also by the people of South Sudan, the region, and the world.
Speaking on behalf of the South Sudan Democratic Forum, the party in which Bona Malwal Madut Ring served as lifetime patron, Dr. Lomuor stated that, along with the National Agenda Alliance, they learned with profound sadness of the passing of the distinguished veteran politician, revered elder statesman, and dedicated community leader. “We are deeply saddened by this great loss,” he said.
Dr. Elia highlighted that the late Uncle Bona Malwal Madut Ring was a remarkable individual whose life was characterised by extraordinary devotion to the service of his community and nation. His unwavering commitment to the cause of the South Sudanese people, particularly his contributions towards self-determination leading to the independence of the Republic of South Sudan, stands as a true testament to his invaluable role in the nation.
He added that Uncle Bona Malwal left an indelible mark on all and that his legacy of humility, strength, and wisdom will continue to inspire future generations. The South Sudan Democratic Forum, together with the National Agenda Alliance, will forever be indebted to his contributions, not only as a founding member of the party but also as its lifetime patron. “We will always remember his foresight, kindness, and generosity,” Dr. Elia stated.
Addressing the family, he encouraged Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal to face all challenges with humility.
“Allow me to assure you of the thoughts and prayers of the entire membership of the South Sudan Democratic Forum, along with the National Agenda Alliance, which are with you and your family during these difficult times,” he said. He added, “We hope you find comfort and strength in the love and support of those around you, as well as in the many cherished memories you created with our late father during his blessed lifetime.”
Dr. Elia concluded by requesting all South Sudanese people and the family to accept their deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences. “May his soul rest in eternal peace, with deepest sympathy and respect.”
Hon. Deng Dau, a member of the Transitional National Assembly, also paid tribute to Uncle Bona Malwal Madut Ring, highlighting his significant contributions as both a leader and journalist during pivotal moments in South Sudanese history. He noted Ring’s role in the Machakos Peace Agreement, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, as critical in the peace process aimed at ending decades of civil conflict in Sudan. Ring’s efforts to save the people of South Sudan during this time reflected his dedication to peace and development in the region.
Hon. Dau emphasised that recognising figures like Uncle Bona Malwal is essential for understanding the historical context of South Sudan and the ongoing efforts toward peace and unity.
He added that Ring’s contributions as a writer on the subject of South Sudanese independence significantly enrich the historical narrative of the region.
“His works provide insights into the political, social, and cultural dynamics that influenced the quest for independence,” he said, noting that books authored by figures like Ring serve as vital resources for understanding the complexities of the independence movement, the challenges faced by the South Sudanese people, and the eventual outcomes of their struggle for self-determination. Such writings not only document history but also inspire future generations to reflect on their identity and the importance of unity and peace in nation-building.
Remembering him personally, Hon. Dau said, “Uncle Bona Malwal was not just an uncle; he was a guiding light, a protector, and a friend. His generous spirit and selfless nature set an example for all of us. From sharing life wisdom to his infectious laughter, Uncle Bona left us with countless beautiful memories that we will always hold dear.”
He added, “Uncle Bona touched the lives of so many in our community. His passion for helping others and his unwavering support for those around him will be missed but never forgotten.”
