The Ministry of Mining on Monday urged law enforcement agencies to combat illegal mining activities and protect the nation’s natural resources.
“The ministry strongly calls on authorities, particularly law enforcement agencies including national security, the mining police, and the South Sudan People’s Defense Force, to unify efforts and coordinate actions to tackle illegal mining,” stated the Ministry of Mining.
In a statement, the ministry revealed that the government will conduct a comprehensive geological survey, beginning in Western Bahr El Ghazal, and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and responsible mining practices across the country.
Furthermore, the Minister of Mining has issued an order regulating gold trading, aimed at eliminating illegal trading while emphasising accountability, social responsibility, and adherence to international standards.
The statement also highlighted that small-scale and artisanal miners must follow responsible practices when selling locally, including compliance with safety and labour standards.
The Ministry of Mining will investigate the recent deadly incident that resulted in the deaths of four artisanal miners in Jebel Iraq, Central Equatoria state.
“The Ministry of Mining reiterates its urgent appeal to law enforcement agencies to collaborate in dismantling illegal mining activities and safeguarding our nation’s resources.”
