The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed the appointment of Kamil Al-Tayeb Idris as Sudan’s prime minister on Tuesday, describing it as a positive step toward inclusive governance.
“This development signals progress toward inclusive governance and offers hope that it will significantly contribute to the ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Sudan,” Youssouf said in a stateemnt.
He expressed hope that this appointment would help restore constitutional and democratic governance in Sudan.
Youssouf urged all Sudanese stakeholders to intensify their efforts toward a peaceful, civilian-led, and inclusive transition that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
He emphasized that the commission remains ready to support Sudan in this regard, in collaboration with regional and international partners.
The chairperson reiterated the African Union’s firm commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and stability of
Sudan, as well as to pursuing a durable political solution that secures peace, development, and democratic governance for all Sudanese.
Sudan’s army chief named Kamil Al-Tayeb Idris as the country’s first prime minister since the eruption of a brutal two-year civil war on Monday. The appointment of Kamil Idris, formerly director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization, was announced in a statement from the military-backed Transitional Sovereignty Council.
Dr. Idris, who hails from northern Sudan, is a seasoned diplomat and former head of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
His appointment comes amid an ongoing civil conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
The violence, which has displaced millions, has left the country on the brink of collapse.
