The Executive Director of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS), Gloria Nyoka Joseph emphasized the crucial role of accurate measurement in driving industrial and economic development
During her remarks on World Metrology Day, celebrated annually on May 20th , Nyoka highlighted how reliable measurements contribute to product quality, environmental protection, and technological progress.
“Whether in times of stability or crisis, the integrity of our measurement systems remains vital for informed decision-making and sustainable progress,” she said.
She reiterated the regulatory obligation to foster a credible, transparent, and internationally organized measurement system.
“It is a cornerstone of our socio-economic transformation. Accurate measurements are integral to ensuring product quality, maintaining consumer confidence, promoting fair trade, and meeting international benchmarks,” she added.
“From calibrating medical devices and validating laboratory tests to guaranteeing fuel quality and weight in marketplaces, metrology touches every sector of our daily life and economic activity.”
This year’s event was held under the theme, “Measurement for All Times, for All People.”
World Metrology Day commemorates the signing of the Metre Convention on May 20, 1875, an international treaty designed to ensure that everyone around the world uses the same metric system to measure weight and length, thereby ensuring fair trade.
John Odongi Nyakapa, Director General of Legal Metrology, said that accurate measurements are the bedrock of innovation, quality assurance, and economic growth.
“They underpin everything from infrastructure construction to the production of essential goods and even the provision of healthcare.”
Odongi explained that accurate measurements ensure the safety of food and medicines, enabling trade and industry to foster scientific research and technological innovation.
“They are the foundation of trust, quality, and progress in our society. In the context of South Sudan’s National Bureau of Statistics, they play a vital role in advising national development by establishing and maintaining robust measurement systems.”
