The management of Abyei Information and Radio Service (AIRS), which operates Abyei FM 102.3 in the Abyei Special Administrative Area, announced on Wednesday that the station will cease operations on Monday, June 2, 2025, due to a lack of funding.

“The management of Abyei Information and Radio Service (AIRS) and Abyei FM wishes to inform the public that the radio service will be shut down starting Monday, June 2, 2025, until further notice,” management stated in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The management of AIRS noted that the radio station has been operating without a fixed budget since September 2024.

“The main donor, IREX, terminated its partnership in August 2024 due to security challenges that hindered our ability to meet objectives,” they explained.

Additionally, the radio station in Agok was looted and destroyed in early 2024, further complicating funding efforts.
“The Project Director has been forced to leave the area for security and safety reasons since 2023, making it increasingly difficult to engage with local partners for support,” they added.

The management is calling for support from well-wishers and the sons and daughters of the area to help sustain the radio station.

“Help us sustain the only media outlet in the region that provides the audience with credible news and life-saving information. Your support is crucial in maintaining this vital service for the community.”

Abyei FM is an independent radio station operated by Abyei Information and Radio Service (AIRS), committed to community service in the Abyei Administrative Area and beyond.
