The  Vice President and Chairperson of the Economic Cluster, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, on Wednesday traveled to Uganda to engage in discussions about peace and security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

During his visit, VP Bol is expected to hold side meetings with African leaders to strengthen diplomatic ties.

The 12th High-Level Meeting of the Regional Oversight Mechanism (ROM) for the Peace, Security, and Cooperation (PSC) Framework aims to address the escalating violence in eastern DRC, where M23 rebels have intensified their attacks.

The summit also seeks to counter broader instability in the Great Lakes region, including spillover effects from Sudan’s civil war and South Sudan’s fragile political transition.

Oyiti Ajawin, press secretary to VP Bol, told the media at Juba International Airport on Wednesday that VP Bol’s attendance underscores the country’s role in regional security efforts.

“There will be sideline meetings with heads of state from across Africa, providing a valuable opportunity for South Sudan to establish strong relationships,” said Ajawin.

He noted that the meeting of the Great Lakes States is expected to offer significant clarity on regional security.

“His Excellency the President has full confidence in Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel to ensure that South Sudan’s representation is clear and well-defined.”
