The Governor of Lakes State, Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor, has announced the reactivation of the state taskforce committee to address concerns over anticipated flooding and its associated health impacts.

Speaking to the press following his official visit to Juba and return to his duties in Lakes State, Governor Mabor emphasised the urgent need to inspect lowland areas across the state before water levels rise uncontrollably.

He highlighted the devastating floods that affected counties such as Rumbek East, Rumbek Centre, Cueibet, Yirol West, and Awerial last year, warning of potential outbreaks of diseases like malaria and cholera if preventive measures are not implemented.

“The pastoralists must manage their herds away from farming areas. The season causes cattle keepers to migrate their cattle to higher ground; they should keep their cows away from crops so that farmers and pastoralists can coexist peacefully. Maintaining peace in Lakes State is a collective effort involving intellectuals, chiefs, youths, and women,” Mabor added.

He confirmed his commitment to fostering peace and unity among the people of Lakes State, as well as with neighbouring states like Unity and Warrap, urging them to remain vigilant against cattle theft.

Mabor concluded by stating that while in Juba, he briefed President Salva Kiir Mayardit on the overall security situation in Lakes State. He noted that the environment is stable, with people engaged in their daily activities, agricultural production, and the free movement of goods along the highway, without road ambushes or checkpoints.

He also noted that the national government, particularly the Vice President and Chair for Economic Cluster, H.E. Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, is committed to supervising the ongoing construction of Bhar El Ghazal roads by African Resources Cooperation (ARC) to facilitate the movement of the population to their respective destinations.
